CALL NUMBERS THAT BEGIN WITH:

A through GV
Books that begin with A through GV have Library of Congress classification (call) numbers and are located in the front of the building on 3rd floor.

Regular size books A to GV are in the south side of 3rd floor. The shelf labels are yellow.

FOLIO and QUARTO books with A through GV call numbers are on the WEST side of 3rd floor. Shelf labels are orange or blue. See floor plan.

 

U of M Dissertations and Theses

MnU-D are U of M PhD dissertations. They have black covers. They are east of the center of 3rd floor.

MnU-M are U of M master's theses; they have maroon covers. They are ahead and to your left as you leave the elevator and staircase, just east of the center of 3rd floor.

 

825 -- 999 are regular Dewey Decimal numbers; they are on the south or back half of 3rd floor.

87, and 88 are special Dewey Decimal numbers

87    -    labelled 87 but shelved as 870

88    -    labelled 88 but shelved as 880

89    -    labelled 89 but shelved as 890

Regular size Dewey books begin at the middle of the south wall and continue around the back (west) wall and end at the middle of the north wall.

Quarto Dewey books are in the far northeast corner of 3rd floor. Shelf labels are BLUE.

Folio Dewey books are in the far northeast corner of 3rd floor. Shelf labels are ORANGE.

Dewey classification -- is a call number system that was applied to those materials added to the library before 1984 --- and arranges books by numbers from 001— 999. Dewey books are housed on the 3rd and 4th floor of the library. For an explanation of how subjects are grouped in the Dewey Decimal system visit the Dewey Summaries pdf and go to page 10.

Call number systems are used by libraries to group books together by subject. Newer books have call numbers that begin with letters.

Quarto shelves have BLUE labels and indicate oversized books, slightly taller than regular size books

Folio shelves have ORANGE labels and are a lot taller than regular size books

Regular shelves have YELLOW labels.
