Information for Instructors

We process requests in the order in which we receive them. The earlier we receive your requests, the sooner we can make them available to your students.

Books:

  • Any book may be placed on reserve for a course in its original bound form. Instructors may place books from either the Library’s general collection or a personal copy on reserve for a course. Books may be submitted to the Reserve Room (65 Wilson Library) along with a completed reserve request form or a course syllabus. If you submit a syllabus, please include call numbers with the titles of the books.

  • If the library does not own a book you need for your course reserve we will order a copy for the general collection to be placed on reserve. Please provide any bibliographic information you have and whether it is available at the University bookstore. As a general rule the library does not purchase textbooks, workbooks or course packets.

  • If you place personal copies on reserve, the library cannot be responsible for their loss or mutilation. We will make every effort to safeguard personal materials and will bill any patron who does not return these materials when they are due.
Photocopies:
  • Photocopies may be submitted to the Reserve Room (65 Wilson Library) along with a completed reserve request form or course syllabus containing full citations.

  • We can accept on reserve photocopied solution sets, tests and exams that an instructor has created, but cannot accept photocopies of solution sets that are part of a workbook published by someone else.

Course Packets:

  • A prepared commercial course packet for which all necessary permissions have been obtained may be placed on reserve.

Electronic Reserve:

Copyright, Licenses, and Permissions

Conditions of Use

Materials may be copied and made available for course reserves under four common conditions:

  1. in the public domain; or
  2. used with permission from the copyright holder; or
  3. used under the provisions of a contract or license agreement , noting that agreements may differ from, and often take precedence over, what is allowed under copyright law; or
  4. used under the provision of Fair Use (U.S. Copyright Act, 17 U.S.C. Section 107), as outlined in the Classroom Guidelines or as determined using a case-by-case four-factor analysis.

Instructor Responsibilities Relating to Fair Use

When using copyrighted works for course reserves under the provisions of Fair Use (Section 107), the following instructor responsibilities apply:

  • All materials submitted by instructors must support course-related teaching, scholarship, or research.
  • Instructors submitting materials are responsible for evaluating, on a case-by-case basis, whether the use of a copyrighted work requires permission or qualifies as fair use. When permissions are needed, instructors or their departments are expected to make any required arrangements for permissions. University Libraries will provide consultation and assistance to instructors in evaluating the qualification of any specific use as a fair use.
  • Whenever copying original materials is involved, whether the copies are made by instructors or by the library, only the amount needed to accomplish the specific educational purpose should be copied. In consultation with library staff, instructors will determine any limits on the amount of material to be used.
  • Access to materials on course reserves must be limited to students currently enrolled and their instructors.

Applications of fair use are predicated on the Libraries' General Principles of Fair Use in Education, and require access controls that restrict access to reserve materials to only registered students and their instructors of that course.

For more details, see the University Libraries' Copyright Standards for Course Reserves.

Copyright Permission Center:

  • The Copyright Permission Center will assist you in obtaining copyright permissions for a fee. For more information, please call 612-624-8258, fax 612-626-9810, or visit their web site at http://www.copyright.umn.edu/home.htm that provides an online Permissions Request form. They are located at 106 Printing Services Building, 2818 Como Avenue S.E., Mpls., MN 55414. Faculty will need to let the Copyright Permissions Center know if copyright permission is sought for traditional and/or electronic reserve. The Copyright Permission Center will need a complete citation and budget number.

If you have any questions or need assistance please call us at 612-624-6576 or send us an email at wilsrsv@umn.edu.
