Canadian Genealogy

Genealogists beginning their research in Canada should obtain a copy of Tracing Your Ancestors in Canada from the National Archives of Canada (NAC), 395 Wellington Street, Ottawa, ON K1A 0N3. The NAC is an excellent source for published family histories, parish registers, census returns, passenger lists, naturalization records, passports, land records, military records, school records, and Métis land claims. Many of their records, including census records, are available by interlibrary loan through your local public library or an LDS Family History Library.

United Empire Loyalists

A special group in Canadian research is the United Empire Loyalists, individuals who emigrated to Canada from the United States just prior to and after the American Revolution. These loyalists were not just British, but included Germans, Indians, French, and others who supported the British. If you believe your ancestor was a UEL, the best place to locate information is the Audit Office Series in the National Archives of Canada. The records are indexed and on microfilm.
