Locating Book Reviews in Wilson Library: Specialized Sources

IMPORTANT:
The best place to check first for book reviews is the online periodical
databases (§) that cover the discipline or subject of the
book reviewed. Most (but not all) periodical databases do include book
reviews. We are constantly adding new databases, and so for an up-to-date
listing, check under "indexes" in LUMINA. Also don't forget that computerized
sources come in CD-ROM also, and these should be accessed by requesting
help at the reference desk. CD-ROM databases are not available remotely,
and they are also only available during the hours that the reference
desk is open.

Specialized
Sources (by Subject) Not Covered by Basic Guide
There are many,
many sources for book reviews in the Wilson Library, but time and attention
are necessary to seek out particularly elusive reviews. The following
list is organized in alphabetical order by subject, to allow you to
determine the subject of your book and to look for reviews in sources
appropriate to that subject. Observe the dates to be sure that the source
covers the time when your book was published. (A dash (-) after the
date indicates that the publication is still being published.)
There are no hard-and-fast
rules for the way in which you must look up a book review in these sources.
Sometimes you can look under the author's name, and at other times,
you must look under "Book Reviews," "Books" or "Reviews." Be sure to
look in the source for the year that your book was published plus 1-4
years afterwards. Ask a librarian for assistance if you encounter difficulty.

searchable by CD-ROM for later dates. If you choose to use the print
index, after 1989 look in the annual index under "Cumulative Book
and Film Title Index" to find book reviews. Otherwise, use the five-year
cumulative indexes and look in the back of the second volume under
"Book Title Index."

MNCAT for Additional Sources
Many book review
sources are located in the regular stacks, where they can be checked
out (i.e., not in Wilson Reference). Examples of the types of searches
that would prove fruitful are the following:

Use the specific
name of a country to determine if book reviews specific to that
country are available. Also see above (e.g., Africana, Asian Studies)
the sources given for the larger geographical area.

Use a literary
genre to determine book reviews for that genre.

Use the name
of a literary figure to determine if he/she ever wrote book reviews.

Use a discipline
to determine book review sources in that discipline. Many of those
are noted already on this sheet and are located in the Reference
Collection, but there are others in the regular stacks.

Use the term
for the literature of a given country to determine sources for
book reviews assessing the literary canon of that country.

|
For subjects
such as feminism, where small press publications are the norm,
many sources for book reviews are available with very specific
coverage.

in the various subject fields have book reviews. Use Katz's Magazines
for Libraries (Wilson Reference (Desk) quarto PN4832 .M34x) to
identify the main periodicals in your field, and then look up those
periodicals in the year that your book was published (plus the next
1-4 years) in the Wilson Periodicals Room.
