BOOKS in the University's Collections

books

Start with a search of the University Libraries' collection by using MNCAT, the U of M Libraries Catalog. The catalog includes the more than 6 million books, but there are also listings for journal subscriptions, maps and other materials owned by the 29 libraries in 15 locations that make up the U of M Libraries.

A handout explaining how to search the catalog is available as well as online help.

The U has 26 libraries in 16 locations. Many of the history books are in Wilson but be sure to check the location in the MNCAT record

For example look up the the title Ghost dancing the law : the Wounded Knee trials by John William Sayer in MNCAT. You'll see that one copy is located on the Twin Cities campus in Wilson Library with the call number TC Wilson KF224.B27 S39 1997

TC simply means Twin Cities campus. Wilson (with no specific location) means the general collection located on 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors.

See the handy Finding Books in Wilson Library to see where the call number range is located.

If you check the Web page Finding Books in Wilson, which links to the Wilson floor plans you'll see that call numbers beginning with KF are shelved on 2nd floor. But before you look for the book on the shelf, click on the call number within the MNCAT record to make sure it has not already been charged out to someone.
