The Gifts Operation of the University of Minnesota Libraries accepts donations of monographs (books). The Serials Exchange Unit of Minitex accepts periodicals (journals, magazines). Note: When a donation contains items the Library already owns, the Library may offer duplicates for sale and then apply the proceeds for other library needs. All gifts received should contribute either directly or indirectly to the program of teaching, research, and service of the University.

Because of the high cost of storage and processing, the Library is unable to accept all donations. Materials which fall outside the Library’s collection policy include: Outdated textbooks, popular mass market paperbacks, popular magazines, commercial sound recordings and videos, materials in less than excellent condition, outdated or superceded titles.

University Libraries' Policy:

• Donated material becomes the property of the University Libraries, to be used at the discretion of the Libraries.
  
  
• For donations of monographs, Gifts will send a letter acknowledging the material donated, stating the number of items and listing a few titles. If a complete list is needed, the donor must prepare and send a copy of the list with the donation.
  
  
• Periodicals donated to Serials Exchange will not receive a letter of acknowledgement.
  
  
• The Libraries cannot appraise the donation for tax purposes. If an appraisal is needed, the donor must arrange to have this done before material is donated.
  
  
• The Libraries will pick up donations within the Twin Cities metropolitan area. To make arrangements for pick up of materials, please contact Gifts at 612-624-9064 for monographs and Serials Exchange at 612-624-6368 for periodicals.
