Disability Access Guide to Wilson Library
Physical Access
- Parking. The 19th Avenue
Ramp and the 21st Avenue
Ramp are the parking facilities closest to Wilson. Call (612) 626-PARK
for more information. See also, Directions

- Building Access. There are two public entrances, one on the first
floor and the second on the basement level. Both entrances are on the east
side of the building and have automatic doors. A basement tunnel connects
Wilson Library to Blegen Hall, Carlson School of Management, Ferguson Hall,
Humphrey Center, and Social Sciences Building.
- Elevators are located in the center of the building and are wheelchair
accessible.
- Restrooms are on all floors except first floor. See Wilson floor
plans, available at the first floor Information Desk, for locations.
- Maps of the campus libraries are available at the Information Desk,
or call (612) 626-2281 for a copy.
Equipment
- Adaptive Technology
Lab, part of the Computer Accomodations
Program. (Wilson Room 307). Request key at first floor Circulation Desk.
- Enhanced LUMINA workstation with a large screen and font enlargement
capabilities is located on the first floor, back wall to the right of the
Reference Desk.
- Wheelchair-height LUMINA workstations. First floor: Two adjustable-height
workstations in center lobby near the elevators. Basement: One wheelchair-accessible
LUMINA workstation is located near the bound periodical collection U-W sequence.
- Microfilm Readers. Periodical Room (Basement) has one wheelchair-accessible
microfilm reader in front of the glass wall of the Newspaper Room.
- Telephones on first floor are at wheelchair accessible height. Pay
phone TTY is in first floor outer lobby.
Adaptive Technology Lab
The Adaptive Technology Lab provides state-of-the-art electronic reading and
information processing aids for people with disabilities on campus. The lab
is set up for quiet, independant use by library patrons. Questions about access
to the room and room conditions can be directed to library circulation staff.

The room is a cooperative project between the University Libraries, Disability
Services, and Academic and Distributed Computing Services. A list of equipment

Access to Books and Periodicals in Wilson Library
- Retrieving materials from the stack shelves. Circulation staff will
page (retrieve) needed items from the shelves for you.
- Paging Hours: On-demand paging is available these hours:
- Monday through Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
- Saturday: 9 a.m.to 5 p.m.
- Sunday: 12 noon to 5 p.m.
If you can't come to the library during these hours, call the Circulation
Desk at (612) 624-3321 during paging hours and request that the materials
be paged and held for you at the Circulation Desk. If at all possible, paging
requests should be submitted in advance, either in person or by phone.
- LUMINA to U is a document delivery service provided to mobility-
or visually-impaired students to ensure access to library materials. Service
includes delivery of books or photocopies of articles to the campus address
or the circulation desk of choice. There is a small fee for article photocopying.
Contact DSO at (612) 624-4037 to speak with a disability specialist to determine
eligibility for this service.
- How to contact LUMINA-to-U :

- Proxy cards. Any student, staff, and faculty with a mobility or visual
impairment may request proxy cards for their personal assistants to charge
out library materials for them. For further information or to pick up an application
form, check with the Circulation Desk at Wilson Library, (612) 624-3321. Students
may need to register with the Disabilities Services Office (16 Johnston Hall,
(612) 624-4037; fax (612) 625-5572).
- Periodicals. Staff at the Reserve/Periodicals Desk will page needed
items, set up microfilm readers if needed, and bring items to the photocopy
service. If possible, please call in advance ((612) 624-6576) to notify staff
when you will arrive. Up to five volumes can be held for a patron. Staff will
extend the loan period, usually for one week.
- Reserve Reading. The Reserve collection consists of materials placed
on short-term circulation for use by students in a course. If possible, call
in advance at (612) 624-6576 to notify staff when you will arrive. Up to three
items can be held for a patron. Exceptions: If the patron has a letter of
permission from the instructor, the number of items and/or length of loan
period may be extended. Generally, an extended loan period would be one week.
For further information or to request exceptions, contact a full-time staff
member during daytime business hours (Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30
p.m.).
Library Services

directional information, referrals to subject specialists and collections,
catalog information for books and periodicals, and basic instruction for MNCAT
and LUMINA.

The General Reference Service desk is located on the first floor
of Wilson Library. Consult reference staff for questions about searching
MNCAT and other databases available through LUMINA,
help identifying periodical indexes and reference books for your topic,
and just about any other question you have about using the libraries.
The Specialized Reference Service, located in Room 180A in Wilson
Library, is offered by the Subject Specialists. Patrons can be referred
by the General Reference librarians to the Subject Specialists during their
scheduled hours, or make appointments with a
Subject Specialist to obtain individual assistance. For two hours each weekday,
a Humanities and a Social Sciences Subject Specialist are on hand to assist
University of Minnesota students, faculty, and staff with their intensive
research needs.
If your research requires very specialized and/or lengthy consultation,
it may not be possible for reference staff to meet all of your research
needs within the parameters of the reference desk service. Please call ahead
for extended services such as a tour of a branch or unit, help finding numerous
bibliographic sources, advice about selecting and using very specialized
sources or a lengthy consultation on term paper research. If your request
falls within a particular subject area, please call and set up an appointment
to meet with the library
staff person who has responsibility for collecting library material
in your subject area. If your request does not fall within a particular

- Intensive or Long-Term Research Assistance. For intensive or long-term
research assistance, please contact the Disabilities Services Office at (612)
624-4037.
- Closed-Caption Videorecordings Collection, LRC, 204 Walter Library.
Wilson Library selectors in the Humanities and Social Sciences have purchased
a number of closed-captioned videorecordings. The collection is housed in
the Learning Resources Center, 204 Walter Library. The Reference Desk, first
floor, Wilson, has a list of the titles. For more information call the LRC
at (612) 624-1584.
- Photocopy Services. Wilson Library Basement center lobby area now
has a more user-friendly photoduplication service area. The new space has
three service windows; one meets ADA requirements. Self-service photocopiers
with enlargement capabilities in the basement lobby are available all hours
the building is open. Photocopy services can make copies from books, journals,
microfiche, microfilm, maps, etc. They sell computer discs and photocopy cards.
Staff will also make enlargements of library guides free of charge. Due to
copyright laws, there are some restrictions on what and how much material
can be copied; when necessary, staff can make certain exceptions.
Access to Materials in Other Libraries

(ILL) provides access to materials that are not available at the University
of Minnesota Libraries. Request forms are available at the Interlibrary
Loan service counter on the first floor, and at all reference and circulation
desks. Please indicate on the request form any requirements for special
formats or on-campus delivery preferences for loans. Articles will be mailed
to the address provided. Staff are available to assist with filling out
request forms. To place an order by phone, please identify your need for
assistance. Generally, there is no charge for ILL. You will be notified
if your request cannot be filled without incurring a charge.

- Online Requests for Interlibrary Loan from Worldcat and RLIN BIB:
If you find a listing in WorldCat* or RLIN Bibliographic File** for a book
not owned by the University Libraries, you may send a request directly to
the Interlibrary Loan Office from the record screen in WCAT or RLIN. Once
you have selected a citation, follow the prompts to "request" in RLIN or to
"order" in OCLC. To access WCAT or RLIN, go to the LUMINA menu and choose
"other." For more information ask at the Reference desk on first floor.
- Worldcat is a joint catalog listing the books and other materials
owned by 17,000 libraries, mostly in the United States.
**RLIN Bibliographic File is the joint catalog of the Research Libraries
Information Network, a consortium whose membership includes the University
of Minnesota Libraries.
